Forty days of prayer, fasting and giving before Easter. Count the Jesus Prayer on a rope of fifty knots, or the Kyrie forty times, in your browser or in Japa on iPhone and Apple Watch.

–

Japa follows Western dates, Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday. Eastern churches calculate Pascha differently and begin Great Lent on Clean Monday. Lent dates to 2030.

Count today’s, right here.

Choose a prayer and tap the dial once for each time you say it. The Jesus Prayer is counted on a rope of fifty knots, two ropes for the day; the Kyrie is the day’s forty. No account or download.

Changing practice starts a new count.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Total: 0 recitations

With the dial focused: Space, Enter or ↑ to count; ↓ to undo.

Your count stays in this tab and resets on reload. Nothing is saved or sent.

The practices Japa keeps through Lent

The Jesus Prayer is two rounds of a fifty-knot prayer rope; the Kyrie is not counted on a rope, so its dial is simply the day’s forty.

The daily counts are Japa’s suggestions, not a rule of the season. Change them, or keep the prayers you were taught instead.

How Lent is kept

Ash Wednesday to Easter

In Western churches Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (10 February in 2027) when many receive ashes, and runs to Easter. Sundays are not counted among the forty days. Japa keeps it through Holy Saturday, 27 March; Easter Day is 28 March.

Prayer, fasting and giving

The season’s three customs are prayer, fasting or abstinence, and almsgiving. What is given up, and how strictly, differs between churches and between people.

Great Lent in the East

Eastern churches calculate Pascha differently, begin Great Lent on Clean Monday and keep Holy Week apart from it. The Jesus Prayer and the Kyrie both come from that tradition; the Jesus Prayer is often prayed under a spiritual father’s direction.

Japa’s range is the span of its suggestions, not a definition of the liturgical season, and has not been independently verified against a published calendar. Check it against the calendar your own church keeps, such as the USCCB liturgical calendar.

Keep the season in Japa.

Lent is in Japa’s holy-days calendar. Add it and the Jesus Prayer comes to Today at a hundred a day and Kyrie Eleison at forty, from Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday, then they step back when the season ends. Your own history is never touched. There is no Lent course or daily reading in the app: just the prayers, counted.

Unlimited counting, the built-in collection, Apple Watch and up to three saved practices are free. Adding a holy day to Today, unlimited practices, your whole history and private iCloud sync are part of one optional Japa Lifetime purchase. Never a subscription.

Japa is made by Colin Sergay, an independent developer. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any church, mosque, teacher or community.
