Hasbunallah

God is enough for us, and the best of guardians

حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ

Ḥasbunā-llāhu wa-niʿma l-wakīl

Words from the Qur'an said in the face of threat. The verse records what was said by those who were told that an army had gathered against them, and who answered with this rather than with fear.

What the words say

Ḥasbunā — God is our sufficiency, enough for us. Wa-niʿma l-wakīl — and what an excellent wakīl: the one to whom an affair is entrusted, a guardian or an agent acting on another's behalf. The word is legal before it is devotional, and the sentence is about handing a matter over.

Where it comes from

Qur'an 3:173, in the passage following the battle of Uḥud. The same words are attributed to Abraham in the fire in the ḥadīth literature, which is part of why they carry the weight they do.

How it is practised

Recited for reassurance and in difficulty, and counted as dhikr. The count here is this app's goal.
