Buddhist observance

Ko-Nawin

A 90-day version of a Burmese devotional practice focused on the Buddha’s nine qualities. Other Ko-Nawin forms exist; this schedule is not a universal rule for Vassa.

Also known as Ko Nawin, Konawin.

For the first nine days, repeat each attribute 108 times before moving to the next: one tap per repetition of one attribute, 972 in total. Later phases repeat the displayed phrase. Follow your teacher’s guidance. These are optional practice suggestions. Adjust the goals and follow your own tradition. Dates and customs may differ by community.

When it falls

Whose reckoning these dates follow

Not a dated festival. Ninety days begun on a day you choose; the suggested start is the Waso full moon, when Vassa begins.

Why communities differ

The suggested start is associated with Burmese Vassa practice. Ko-Nawin schedules differ between teachers; this app uses one 90-day variant and also allows a start date of your choice.

Japa has not independently verified these dates against a published calendar. Check them against the authority your own community keeps.

The practices Japa keeps through it

Adding an observance in Japa brings these to Today at their traditional counts for as long as it runs, and withdraws them when it ends. Your own history is never touched.

Keep the days you keep.

Japa's calendar reads as one list: what is running now, then everything starting in the next ninety days, narrowed to the traditions you follow. Browsing every observance is free; adding one to Today is part of Japa Lifetime.
